The 47% resistance problem
When we onboard new L&D teams, nearly half report initial employee resistance to AI coaching. This is not a Dutch phenomenon alone, but the Netherlands presents a specific pattern: high digital literacy combined with strong workplace consultation culture means employees ask harder questions before adoption.
The resistance is not universal. Our analysis of implementation patterns across Dutch corporate training shows the gap is not between resistant and willing employees. It is between organisations that address specific objections upfront and those that hope enthusiasm will overcome scepticism.
This post examines five recurring objections we have encountered across implementations with training companies, HR departments, and independent coaches. Each pattern includes the underlying concern and the specific intervention that resolved it.
1. "AI cannot understand Dutch workplace culture"
The first objection surfaces immediately in discovery calls: can an AI coach navigate the Dutch directness that foreigners interpret as rudeness but Dutch professionals see as efficiency? Can it recognise when a colleague is being genuinely critical versus simply clear?
This concern is legitimate. Dutch workplace communication operates on unstated rules: directness without hierarchy signals, feedback delivered as observation rather than judgement, consensus-building that can feel endless to outsiders but produces lasting buy-in for insiders.
The underlying fear: employees worry AI coaching will teach American-style positivity frameworks that feel inauthentic in Dutch contexts. They have experienced generic soft skills training that ignored how Dutch teams actually communicate.
The solution that works: custom methodology training where the AI coach is built on the trainer's existing Dutch workplace frameworks. Implementation insight: position AI coaching as access to unlimited practice with scenarios that matter for career progression. Employees could see the progression: easy mode for new concepts, hard mode for scenarios they would face in enterprise deals. This framing made practice feel like professional development, not remediation.
3. "This will replace human trainers"
The third objection comes from trainers themselves, and it surfaces in every market where AI coaching enters corporate L&D. If an AI coach can deliver my methodology at scale, why does the organisation need to pay for my time?
This fear is not irrational. The corporate training market has consolidated around scalable delivery before: e-learning platforms, learning management systems, video-based courses. Each wave promised to "democratise training" while reducing trainer headcount.
The underlying concern: trainers worry AI coaching will commoditise their expertise. They have spent years developing methodology, building client relationships, and refining how they deliver feedback. They see AI as a threat to the consulting model that sustains their practice.
The solution that works: position AI coaching as trainer leverage, not replacement. The successful implementations we have seen all follow the same pattern: the trainer remains the expert who designs methodology, selects scenarios, and provides strategic coaching. The AI coach handles repetitive practice at scale.
Hanneke Voermans from Flawsome Future represents this model. She specialises in perfectionism and burnout prevention for Dutch leaders. Her expertise is diagnosing why high-performing managers burn out and designing intervention strategies. An AI coach can deliver her Tiny Habits protocol and guide emotion regulation exercises, but it cannot diagnose why a specific leader's perfectionism is surfacing now or what systemic changes their organisation needs.
The economics support this positioning. Hanneke's strategic consulting remains high-value work. The AI coach enables her to serve 100 leaders simultaneously with daily practice support while she focuses on the diagnostic and strategic work only she can do. Her revenue per client drops slightly, but her total revenue increases because she can serve 10x more clients.
Implementation insight: the trainer owns the IP, sets the methodology, and remains the named expert. The AI coach is their tool for scaling delivery. This is why our platform prioritises voice cloning: the AI coach sounds like the trainer because it represents their practice, not a generic vendor.
4. "Our data will train competitors' AI models"
The fourth objection has intensified since early 2024: employees and procurement teams worry their practice conversations will become training data for commercial AI models. The fear is specific: if we practice customer conversations with an AI coach, will those conversations be used to train AI models that our competitors can access? Will our methodology leak to the market?
The underlying concern: organisations have invested heavily in developing proprietary sales methodologies, customer service frameworks, and leadership development approaches. They view these as competitive advantages. They worry AI vendors will extract this IP through training data collection.

Implementation insight: lead with data residency in your first conversation with procurement and works councils. This is not a technical detail to address later. It is a primary objection that blocks adoption if left unresolved.
5. "We tried AI chatbots and they were terrible"
The fifth objection carries the most emotional weight: we have already tried AI training tools and they failed. Employees are not resisting AI coaching in principle. They are resisting another disappointing experience with technology that promised transformation and delivered frustration.
The chatbot comparison appears in almost every discovery call. L&D teams describe implementations where employees typed questions, received generic responses, and abandoned the tool within weeks. They worry voice AI coaching is the same technology with a different interface.
The underlying concern: decision fatigue. L&D teams have evaluated dozens of AI tools in the past 18 months. Most were rebranded chatbots with minimal workplace application. They worry AI voice coaching is another vendor hype cycle that will consume budget and produce no measurable learning outcomes.
